INDIVIDUAL THERAPY FOR MEN

Men have historically been underserved in the area of mental health due largely to societal stigma and conditioning. Our counselling sessions for men tend to be focused on empathically listening to the client, working on skill building around communicating in relationships – especially with their children and primary partner – and bringing awareness to parts of themselves that may be causing them harm, such as explosive anger, self-medicating, and stuffing down their feelings.

Many men report feeling very little – feeling numb – in their day to day lives, so we work on expanding their ability to feel a healthy range of emotions. Validation is an important part of men’s therapy – letting them know the feelings they carry about their experiences are valid and that they deserve to share their stories and be heard. To the extent that the client is willing, we also look at intergenerational family systems to help bring understanding to family dynamics and belief systems that have been inherited, and that may not be serving the client any longer.
